1.  Remove rust from kitchen items with a potato.

Yes, a potato…even those knives that have rust spots. Just dip the cut end in dish soap or baking soda and firmly rub it over the rusted area. If the end of the potato gets slick, slice it off and dip the newly cut end. Repeat until rust is removed, rinse, and dry.

2.  Use Kool-Aid to clean your toilet bowl.

Kool-Aid makes a great toilet ring remover. Just sprinkle the powder around the bowl, let it sit, brush down the sides and flush. You can also use Alka Seltzer or Coca-Cola.

3.  Use stale white bread to clean marker off the wall.

On the off chance that you kept your stale white bread, you’re in luck. If you kids decided to use the wall of your new home as a canvas for their latest masterpiece, moisten up the stale bread and rub it on the mark. Boom, it’s gone.

4.  Shine up your plants with mayonnaise.

Mayonnaise?  What? Apparently so.  If you want to shine up your plant’s leaves, rub them with a mayonnaise-dipped tissue until you see your reflection in the leaves.

5.  Use a lint roller to dust lampshades and leather furniture.

This tip makes life so easy. Run a lint roller over your lampshades, leather chairs and sofas and pillows. It will catch any dust and hair that accumulates, unlike a feather duster, which move the dust particles into the air.

6.  Disinfect Your Sponge

Scientists reported that putting sponges in your microwave (completely wet, never dry) for two minutes at high power, killed or inactivated over 99 percent of pathogens in sponges that had been soaked in fecal bacteria, viruses, protozoan parasites and bacterial spores.  Horrified yet?  Only microwave sponges or plastic scrubbers that do not contain steel or other metals.

7.  Don’t Forget to Clean the Garbage Disposal

Does your garbage disposal get an unpleasant odor?  Drop in a cut-up lemon, some salt, and a few ice cubes to clear away any unwanted odors or built-up residue.

8.  Use a Lemon to Clean Stainless Steel Faucets

Cut a lemon in half and start rubbing to remove hard water stains and rust from any stainless steel in the bathroom or kitchen.  Lemons are the best!

9.  Steam-Clean Your Microwave

Just squeeze some lemon juice into water, drop the rinds into the water, and microwave. As the liquid boils, it condenses on the sides of the microwave, loosening gunk and dissolving food splatters. The lemon juice is a natural cleaning agent, and so all you have to do is use a clean towel to wipe everything clean.

10.  Dust With Fabric Softener Sheets or Old Socks Who’ve Lost Their Mate

Use them to dust your television screens. The anti-static chemicals in a dryer sheet will help to repel dust and lint.  Dryer sheets will easily wipe up talcum powder, flour, and other messes of this type. Do you have the same pile of lone socks that managed to survive the dog like we do?  Put one on like a mitten to dust tight areas and Venetian blinds. Remember to work top to bottom when dusting to avoid wasting time going over surfaces twice.

11.  Clean Your Dishwasher

What good is a dirty dishwasher? After you remove any visible grime, place a (dishwasher safe) cup of vinegar on the top shelf and run the hottest cycle your dishwasher has. After that, sprinkle a cupful of baking soda around the bottom and run it through a short but complete cycle using the hottest water.

12.  Clean Your Shower Head

You can clean your shower head easily by letting it soak in vinegar overnight. Fill a sandwich baggie with vinegar, using a rubber band, carefully secure the bag over the shower head so it’s fully submerged.  Leave the whole thing to soak overnight.  Be sure you remember to remove the vinegar bag before you turn on the shower in the morning!
