5 Easy Ways to Decorate for Christmas

Christmastime is here, and that means it’s time to deck the halls with all the decorations you can muster–or, at a minimum, drag those dusty old boxes out of the attic and figure out how you’re going to decorate this year. If you’re hoping for a magical Christmas but don’t have a great deal of time or money to decorate, consider these easy decorating ideas. You can deck your house out beautifully without breaking the bank…a win all the way around!

1. Use cinnamon ornaments on your tree.

If you don’t have a stash of ornaments put aside and need to decorate on a budget, cinnamon ornaments are a quick, easy project to make with the kids or grandkids, or to make on your own. Simply mix up a batch of salt dough: 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup flour, and 1/4 cup water. Then, add a heaping tablespoon to color and scent the dough. Mix until it’s smooth, then roll it out and cut with your favorite cookie cutters. Make sure to use a toothpick to make a hole at the top of each ornament. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours. Allow to cool, add ribbon, and place on the tree: simple!

2. Pick up a wreath or two.

If you’re looking for an easy way to make the outside of your house look festive without breaking your budget on lights, try hanging a wreath on the front door or even on your windows. The gorgeous wreaths will show your Christmas cheer to everyone who passes by.

3. Decorate with greenery.

Raid the trees in your yard for evergreen branches–bonus points if you go out after a storm and pick them up off of the ground instead of cutting them fresh! Then, use those branches to decorate your mantle, to wrap around your banister, or to brighten a display.

4. Put the kids to work.

Do you have children, grandchildren, or students that you’re able to see regularly? Let them help you decorate! They can even create their own nativity scene in a shoe box, make ornaments out of pipe cleaners and beads, or create a holiday display that you’ll cherish for years.

5. Pull out the poinsettias.

These gorgeous flowers will look lovely on your front porch or in your kitchen. Just remember to keep them up away from pets and small children, as they are poisonous if ingested.

Decorating for the holiday season doesn’t have to be a stressful proposition! Instead, take advantage of the things you already have or use simple decorations to create the effect you’re after without making you sweat with the effort.
