April Fools’ Day Guide to Air Conditioning Pranks

April Fools’ Day is here again. Time to break out the best pranks to fool friends and foes alike. Let’s take a look at some of the best hoaxes from April 1st of years past, and give some ideas on air conditioning pranks that can be played this year.

April Fools’ Day Pranks of the Past

The origin of April Fools’ Day has been debated. Some say silly festivities have been held at the end of March or beginning of spring since Hilaria in Rome. People disguised themselves to commemorate the seasons “fooling” people into thinking winter was over and spring was to begin. Others say April Fools’ Day began when the Council of Trent in 1563 declared the switch from the Julian to Gregorian calendar and moved the new year from the last week in march to January 1st. Either way, it has been celebrated with phony stories, pranks and hoaxes to trick unsuspecting fools for many centuries.

The Museum of Hoaxes declared the “Swiss Spaghetti Harvest” hoax to be the best April Fools’ Day prank of all time. The hoax was done by a news show called Panorama on the BBC channel. It involved an elaborate story and fake footage of Swiss farm workers who supposedly harvested spaghetti from trees, explaining that a mild winter caused excessive spaghetti to grow from the trees. Many called and wrote the channel to find out how they could grow a spaghetti tree in their yards.

Modern Day April Fools’ Day Hoaxes

In 1996, Taco Bell aired an advertisement that claimed they had bought Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell. The television show, The Office, made a running gag out of April Fools’ Day style pranks, as Jim constantly looked to get back at his office foe, Dwight Schrute. Local Florida news outlets reported on April 1, 2014, to have seen a “manaphin” in the Tampa Bay waters. Claiming it was a hybrid cross of a manatee and a dolphin, the news tricked so many into believing it was true that it was named one of the top April Fools’ Day hoaxes of that year.

Air Conditioning Pranks for April Fools’ Day

Fill the air vents in a home, office or automobile with powder or a fun party confetti. We think you can guess what happens when the air conditioning kicks on for a cycle.

Another way to prank someone on April Fools’ Day using the air conditioner is to enlist the help of a faux animal friend. Plant a frightening animal — snakes, spiders or rats usually do the trick, inside of an air vent in the home or office. Then, claim that you hear and see something rumbling inside of the air vents. Wait as the foolish suspect is pranked by your powers.

What’s that smell? Change the air filters of a home or office and replace with a smelly-scented filter that will fool the entire place into thinking that they forgot to shower! Just be sure to have a new filter ready for when the prank has run its course.
