Sterilization units are self-contained and attach to return air systems. They kill mold, bacteria, and viruses. Some UV units also have HEPA (high-efficiency particulate arrestance) filters to remove very tiny particulates in the air. Not all forced-air systems can handle HEPA filtration due to air resistance of the filters. Some air cleaning units use supplemental blowers in them to overcome air resistance. The level of filtration may be limited by the system the units are connected to.
