Earth Day: How to Make Your AC Eco-Friendly

Earth Day is coming— April 22 to be exact. Are you worried that your air conditioner should be more eco-friendly in its noble cooling efforts? You’re probably right. Air conditioning accounts for more than 40 percent of the average home’s energy costs, so it would do your wallet and the earth right if you took these easy steps to make it more energy efficient. After all, another hot Space Coast summer is quickly on its way back into town.

Fix Ductwork Issues

Dirty or leaking air ducts can cause anywhere from 20 to 40 percent of energy inefficiency in a home, even with an energy efficient air conditioner. Air ducts bring air into a home and they also take the air out. They keep your home clean and fresh, so you can enjoy the great indoors all year round. Over time, dust and other pollutants gather in your air ducts, making it harder for your air conditioner to pump fresh air through. To keep indoor air quality high and your system running smoothly, it’s vital that you have these pollutants regularly cleaned out and checked for any gaps that could let air escape and diminish energy efficiency.

Replace Dirty Air Filters

An air conditioner’s air filter is in place to grab any particles that may float through your air conditioner, and it should be replaced every couple of months. However, when the AC is running almost constantly during warmer months, consider replacing the air filter at minimum every 30 days. Use an air conditioning air filter with a MERV rating of 6 or higher for the best performance, according to ASHRAE. Our WE Filter Club will help you remember to change your air filter each month and we make it easy for you to order the correct filter for your AC system.

Air Conditioning Maintenance

Did you know that you can conserve energy costs by nearly 30 percent just with regular air conditioning maintenance? Annual maintenance makes your system run smoothly and efficiently by ensuring that all of its working parts are clean and tuned. With so much else in life to remember we realize that air conditioning maintenance doesn’t make it high on the priority list. That’s why we created our WE Club Clean & Tune. During the clean and tune maintenance appointment, a WEATHER ENGINEERS technician will thoroughly clean and inspect your system. The technicians use a detailed checklist to make sure they examine every part of your system making sure that it runs as eco-friendly as possible.

Energy Efficient Air Conditioner Upgrade

Energy costs still rising and your air conditioner is still not cooling as efficiently as it could? It may be time to upgrade to a new and energy efficient air conditioner. Air conditioners with a SEER rating of 13 or higher are recommended for Florida homes. To work in conjunction with the air conditioner, a dehumidifier can also be helpful to improve energy efficiency in your home.

Easy, Eco-Friendly AC Tips

Ceiling fans are another easy and eco-friendly option inside of the home to help your air conditioner use less energy. Remember, fan blades should spin counter-clockwise during the hot summer months, and clockwise to circulate the air during the cooler months.

Check your outdoor unit to be sure it is free from any obstructions that could make the air conditioner work harder than needed. Also, be sure to avoid positioning landscaping too close to the air conditioning unit. While placing plants and shrubbery to create shade in your yard can help to keep the air conditioner cool and working more efficiently, positioning the landscaping too close can obstruct the unit making it work harder.
