Facts About Water Quality

National Water Quality Month in August is a good time to take all of our actions into account and see how they affect the water quality on our planet. Although every month is a good month to start taking action against water pollution, August creates a special awareness with all the summer water activities at play.

Why we Celebrate

Water is the most vital resource on earth and sustains all life. It has been around since the beginning of time and will remain on earth forever. It recycles itself through the water cycle but unfortunately human actions have had a detrimental effect on nature’s way of purifying the water that relates to sustainability, geography, sanitation, urbanization and human rights.

The History

The Clean Water Act was passed in 1972 to raise awareness to the threatening increase in water pollution. The Clean Water Act declares that more than half of national park waterways are impaired and fail to meet quality standards. This could mean that there are high levels of pathogens, heavy metals, mercury, nutrients or sediment which are not only harmful to the environment but could be deadly for human consumption or exposure.

Ways to Avoid Water Pollution

It’s never too late to make a change in our water quality. If everyone contributes something little towards decreasing water pollution, eventually all our actions will make a big difference. You may not think that you play a big role in polluting our waters but here are some things you may be using that are decreasing water quality:

  • Antibacterial soaps
  • Harsh cleaning products
  • Pesticides
  • Chemical Fertilizers
  • Automobiles
  • Lawn Mowers
